On Tuesday, Aug. 17, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department reported that a jail guard in Guilford County’s downtown Greensboro jail had been charged with having sex with an inmate.
The act was said to be consensual. However, given the power dynamic between a jail guard and inmates, the notion of “consent” is hard to unpack.
The Sheriff’s Department announced that criminal charges were being brought against Guilford County Detention Services Officer Barry J. Ferrell for violating North Carolina General Statute 14-27.31(b) – which makes it a felony for a jail guard to have intercourse or other sexual activity with an inmate.
The department alleges that Ferrell engaged in a “consensual sexual act” with a female inmate. That information became known after an investigation by Sheriff’s Department detectives. Currently, the charges emanate from a single incident alleged to have taken place at the county’s 1,032-bed detention center in Greensboro.
According to the department’s findings, the sexual act occurred in July 2021.
Ferrell has been released on a $75,000 unsecured bond.
The press release from the Sheriff’s Department that provided the information added that, “As this matter is presently being prosecuted by the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office, no further information will be released at this time.”
The NC General Statute being applied is titled “Sexual activity by a substitute parent or custodian.” The applicable language reads: “If a person having custody of a victim of any age or a person who is an agent or employee of any person, or institution, whether such institution is private, charitable, or governmental, having custody of a victim of any age engages in vaginal intercourse or a sexual act with such victim, the defendant is guilty of a Class E felony.”
The statue also notes that “Consent is not a defense to a charge under this section.”
Is this what you call a work release?
Actually it’s what you call biased reporting. There were two Greensboro police officers who had committed sex crimes a couple of years ago and John Hammer failed to report on either one of them but they were both white so that explains it.
B you be so racist You probably marched through Greensboro when the looting and burning took place
Looting and rioting is the correct response to police racism. If you do not like the looting and the rioting then get the cops under control.
So let me get straight. If you get robbed and raped are you going to call the looters or the police just asking
What does looting and burning innocent businesses have to do with the police. You’re as ignorant as your post
Dearest B,
I would like to think that a privately held publication can publish whatever they choose. They have time and space deadlines and may simply have more information from their sources in order to cover a certain story fully. If you were looking to offend white cops I’m sort of at a loss since I’m both white and I’ve worked in law enforcement for 20 years and I’m not bothered by that little jab in the least. The only relevant skin to the article would be foreskin. The race of the person(s) involved in any type of alleged infraction is purely objective and has no bearing on the investigation nor the outcome. Both GPD and GCSO have impeccable internal affairs divisions that will conduct thorough and fair investigations without any doubt whatsoever as to their objectivity or professionalism as do the patrolmen and detectives that are out working for You and John Q everyday.
That’s a nice load of garbage you’re laying on me but anyone that pays attention to police statistics knows that black people are disproportionately harmed by interactions with police. They’re more likely to be charged more harshly sentenced and interactions with black people and police are double what interactions with white people and police are when you factor in their overall percentage of the population. You can give me all the excuses you want to justify the atrocious way that police treat people but no one is buying it. And this isn’t the only article where John Hammer has glossed over crimes committed by white cops and focuses solely on issues with black police officers. John Hammer has also used a suspects race in an article where that person’s race was completely irrelevant to the story to try to dog whistle people into thinking that black people are more likely to be drug dealers.
More White people were killed by police last year than blacks. Look it up true story
Sure. And I have some ocean front property I’m giving away in Albuquerque.
Perhaps a “perk”?
Look it up chucky that’s a fact
More like release at work
A detention center with 1032 beds is what I got out of it. Thugs will be thugs. He will make a rap song out of it and cash that loot.
The worst thugs in the world have badges that allow them to commit their crimes with impunity.
Now he will know what it is like to be “ on the other side”! Such a disrespect to the badge and fellow employees! He might find what he needs with his cell mate?
There is no reason to respect the badge as it stands now for any reason simply because of the way black people are targeted by police.
B- what and who do you respect? You may not like who is behind the badge but there is always reason to respect the badge. The badge is to be blind to race, creed and color. Yes the person behind the badge may not be. It is the responsibility of the department and the community to rid that problem.
What have YOU done for your community to reduce crime in your neighborhood or you one the those who yells and screams but does nothing? Do you protect the drug dealers, thieves and others in your neighborhood or would you be one to assist to turn your neighborhood around. There are so many excellent, law abiding, church going citizens in all of our communities, who are afraid. Would you be willing to help them or coward with words and no action?
Wasn’t there a juicy scandal with the Guilford County High Sheriff in the 90’s? Sheriff Profit? Sexual favors from the wife of an inmate. Sold a lot of newspapers in it’s day. He would hang if it happened today in the age of Me Too. He even ran again after the fact, but lost to BJ.
I agree with everyone about everything. If anything, this is funny.
Well, I guess it’s fairly obvious there’s a racist B@$+@rd in the room. Someone has a chip on their shoulder the size of the Lincoln financial building downtown and apparently does not hold any love for the hard working men & women who protect & serve ALL citizens in our community.
There is only one race – the human race.
May you be caught while doing your burning & looting and prosecuted to the fullest extent allowed by law. Until then, please be sure and look both ways real good before you cross any streets. Karma is a beast.
