This year, the city’s Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities will hold its annual “Shopper’s Day” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12 at the Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro.

This is the 39th annual Shopper’s Day, which is an event that brings together hundreds of people with disabilities and volunteers – many of whom are local high school students – for a day of holiday cheer, shopping and entertainment.

According to event organizers, the day “aims to promote empathy, acceptance, and compassion, while creating awareness of the daily challenges people with disabilities face.”

As part of Shopper’s Day at the mall, the city’s Mayor’s Committee provides refreshments, free gift wrap, and, of course, visits with the big man from the North Pole himself, Santa.  Shoppers can even get pictures with Santa if they choose. There will be other entertainment as well, and the committee will give each special shopper $10 to help with their gift-buying or lunch.

If you’d like more information about the event, you can contact Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation Coordinator Sharon Williams at Sharon.Williams@greensboro-nc.gov or 336-373-2954.

The Mayor’s Committee is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit coalition of businesses, human service agencies and people of all levels of abilities with the stated mission of creating “a barrier-free community.”

Last year, the free one-of-a-kind event benefited roughly 700 participants who faced moderate-to-severe disabilities.

It was managed by more than 400 community volunteers and featured live musical performances, refreshments and a gift-wrapping station.

Just before the 2023 Shopper’s Day, the chair of the committee said, “This is the highlight of the holiday season for hundreds of local people” and added that the event wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of donors.
