While ticket prices can be higher and direct flights might be fewer than at some other airports, Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) has a whole lot to offer – like shorter lines, less chaos, nice and helpful airport ambassadors and more. Which is why in an online survey the airport ended up just being named as one of the top 10 small airports in the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for 2024.
This recognition by flyers who voted online places PTI among the best small airports in the country, as determined by travelers nationwide.
This category of USA Today’s 10 Best Awards highlights small airports that provide “convenience, ease of travel, and exceptional service.”
Executive Director of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority Kevin Baker was of course delighted with the outcome and the positive publicity the ranking brings with it.
“PTI’s inclusion in this year’s top 10 is a testament to our commitment to creating an easy and enjoyable experience for passengers who call PTI home,” Baker said of the results. “This achievement reflects the hard work of our entire team and our tenant community.”
Some of the positives cited for the airport are its strategic location in the center of North Carolina and a notable dedication to safety and customer service,
PTI stood out especially as a preferred airport for business and leisure travelers who use four regular carriers – Allegiant, American, Delta, and United.
The airport, which like all airports, was hit hard during the 2020 pandemic, has seen steady growth in passenger numbers since then and the expansion of its service offerings in 2024 – including the addition of direct service to Denver and Washington Dulles.
The airport did increase its parking charges at the start of 2024 but the cost still isn’t as high as it is at many other airports – and PTI offers convenient parking options within a short distance of the terminal for those who don’t mind paying a little extra.
Also, the airport’s campus and aviation megasite – which has been growing like kudzu – is already home to more than 30,000 jobs and, according to airport officials, contributes $9 billion each year to the local economy.
Baker expressed his gratitude to the airport’s supporters.
“We want to thank everyone who voted for PTI, and our goals will always be to support our local economy and provide travelers with a convenient, stress-free alternative to larger airports,” Baker also said in the wake of the results
“We remain committed to enhancing the travel experience, offering more flights and services, and contributing to the continued success of our region.”

The Piedmont Triad International Airport Authority – which owns, operates, and manages the airport – is governed by a board of directors representing three cities,
Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem, as well as two counties, Forsyth and Guilford.
Beware of the tricky parking PAY requirements. Bet their revenue has dramatically increased since they took out the parking meters and place small letter directions on how to pay on columns in the departure and arrival area. Meter rent-a-cops waiting to place a ticket on your vehicle. How come this airport does not not have a cell location for parking, but allows Uber drivers to park in a section of the Employee parking only? Do they pay while they wait, I do not know.
This kind of petty harassment has driven people away from GSO.
I know (including me).
Having flown in and out of many airports across the US, I can say that PTI is a blessing. I can be there in 10 minutes and be at the gate in 25 minutes (having a known traveler number helps). Also glad they have direct flights to Dallas which is where my company is located.
Unless you fly up front, flying is an ordeal to be suffered.
