If you’ve been feeling like you could use a little more companionship lately – and you want to help the Animal Shelter staff who constantly have their hands full, then the upcoming Guilford County Animal Services event is for you. Animal Services is partnering with the BISSELL Pet Foundation to hold an “Empty the Shelters” adoption event this month.
Adoption fees are being lowered for the event on all adoptable animals, so it’s also a good time to save a few bucks in a tough economy if you want a pet.
The event, which is now taking place, will run through Tuesday, Oct. 15. The adoption event offers individuals and families an opportunity to adopt a pet at a reduced fee.
Here are the reduced adoption fees that will be offered throughout the event:
Adult Cats and Kittens: $50 (normally $75)
Adult Dogs and Puppies: $25 (normally $75)
Senior Cats and Dogs: Free. (normally $10 for cats and $25 for senior dogs).
In June of 2024, Guilford County management unwisely attempted to raise the adoption fees for senior cats and dogs to high levels; however, after a motion by Commissioner Pat Tilman, the fees on senior cats and dogs remained the same.
The county did go on to unwisely raise the adoption fees for other classes of cats and dogs. The move was penny-wise and pound-foolish:, The county might make a few extra bucks when an animal is adopted; however, especially in a bad economy, the higher fees mean that more animals stay in the shelter longer and that means more overcrowding and more money spent by the county feeding, housing and providing medical care for those animals. The higher fees are probably one reason the animal shelter is having to hold this “Clear the Shelters” event.
Adoptions will be held daily from noon to 4 p.m., excluding Tuesdays, at the Guilford County Animal Resource Center at 980 Guilford College Road in Greensboro. No appointments are needed.

I don’t want anything I have to feed. I love OPDs.
