It’s beginning to look a lot like – well, you know.

The day after Halloween, people began hearing Christmas songs all over the place and they will last until New Year’s Eve as it does each year.

Another highly evident sign that the season is upon us is this: The Guilford Merchants Association’s very popular selfie sleigh will return for the fourth year to High Point Public Library on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a countdown to the lighting of the sleigh as well as the lighting of the library’s Christmas tree.

And, of course, none other than Santa Claus himself will be present taking time out of his busy schedule for photos in the sleigh with you from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Then, sadly, he must return to the North Pole; however, he will leave the sleigh behind in High Point for people to continue to enjoy.  (It’s not known what form of transportation he will use to get home.)

Jim Morgan, a High Point philanthropist and library supporter, is sponsoring the sleigh this year in memory of his late wife, Ann Tisdale Morgan.

The library’s Christmas tree was donated by Ann and Jim Morgan in 2019, and the annual lighting of the tree has served as the official kick-off for the High Point library’s holiday celebrations.

The Guilford Merchants Association purchased the sleigh in 2020 as a gift to the community during the pandemic when the High Point Holiday Parade – along with many other holiday events – were canceled.

The sleigh has been located at the library during the holidays ever since, and it has become a popular spot for family and group photos – as well as for selfies by teens who want a Christmasy photo of themselves for social media sites.

The selfie sleigh will be at the library from Nov. 19 through early January.

Everyone is invited to come out at 5:30 p.m. for the family-friendly countdown for the tree lighting.

Other upcoming holiday festivities in the city include the annual Holiday Parade at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, and the High Point Holiday Stroll on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The High Point Farmers Market, located at the library will also be doing it up for the Christmas season – it will hold a special “Holiday Time at the Market” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the same day as the stroll – December 7.  That Holiday Time will feature local produce, meat, baked goods, crafts, live music and food trucks – and community partners will be represented.

The library will offer events for children from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., including holiday crafts, Storytime and Meet and Greet with Ice Princesses Elsa and Anna – and photos with Santa at 4:30 p.m. (There will be a sensory-friendly priority line).

Also, the library will be included as a trolley stop during the High Point Holiday Stroll.
