Starting on Monday, March 31, the High Point Transit Service will launch a program called “HPTSGo!” – a pilot microtransit service meant to offer increased transit access to areas along North Main Street that are outside the reach of existing fixed-route services.

The pilot program will start with a shared-ride service that will transport riders for $2.50 for a one-way trip. That’s a lot cheaper than an Uber would cost no matter how far you were going.

“HPTSGo!” will operate point-to-point within a designated zone and, initially, it will serve the northwest part of the city along North Main Street between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays.

“The city is excited to offer an innovative transit option for citizens in the microtransit service area,” said Assistant Transportation Director George Eckart upon the announcement of the new program. “The goal is to provide excellent service without increasing existing expenses by utilizing excess capacity on the city’s wheelchair-accessible ACCESS van fleet.”

“This microtransit service will integrate with the existing fixed-route network by utilizing a shared connection point at the North Main Street Walmart bus stop,” Eckart added. “There are many new dwellings that have been built within the microtransit service zone over the last several years, and we would like to provide an opportunity to better connect these people to the rest of the city.”
