Usually, when you think of the High Point-Thomasville HiToms, you’re thinking about the baseball team that’s been around since, well, almost forever. However, this week, the HiToms announced that the organization will be all about High School Football later this month.
The HiToms just announced the schedule for the fourth annual “Triad Kick-Off Classic,” which will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and Friday, Aug. 16.
The Kick-Off Classic, which will include team scrimmages and individual skills contests for the area’s most talented skill position players, will take place at the High Point Athletic Complex’s A.J. Simeon Stadium.
This year, the classic will feature 13 high schools from the Triad region. The event will kick off on August 14 with a three-team scrimmage between long-time Triad powers: High Point Central, Thomasville and North Davidson.
The expanded skills contests this year will feature the Quarterback Throwing Skills Challenge, the Field Goal Kicking Contest and the Punter’s Challenge. The final match-up of the night on August 14 will be at 8:15 p.m. when Randleman takes on Mt. Tabor.
Throughout the entire schedule for the first day of the 2024 Classic, junior varsity squads will also be spotlighted next door at the High Point Athletic Complex.
The second day of the HiToms Kick-Off Classic, August 16, will include 10 high school football teams at Simeon Stadium. The action will start at 6 p.m. with a full-field match-up between Wheatmore and High Point Central.
That will be followed by a skills competition at 7 p.m., as well as two doubleheaders at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.
Day two of the event will also feature junior varsity competitions next door at the High Point Athletic Complex.
Greg Suire, the longtime president of the HiToms organization, said that this year’s event should be a real treat for local high school football aficionados.
“We’ve got a great line-up of games scheduled and it’s punctuated by an expansion of our skills challenge to include quarterbacks and punters,” he said this week. “Unifying the prep football community by providing an exciting, single-site competition continues to expand playing opportunities for our student-athletes and broaden the Triad’s football brand.”
