June is recognized as LGBTQ+ Pride Month. It’s meant to be a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, commemorate the famous Stonewall Uprising, and advocate for equal rights. Pride Month events and marches are scheduled across the country, around the world, and in Guilford County.

On Thursday, June 5, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners is adopting a resolution formally recognizing June 2025 as Pride Month in Guilford County.

The resolution is being sponsored by Commissioner Brandon Gray-Hill, the board’s first and only openly gay county commissioner.

The resolution to be adopted Thursday night affirms Guilford County’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and the protection of civil rights for all county residents. The document emphasizes the county’s support for the rights of every citizen to experience equality and freedom from discrimination.

“Guilford County supports the rights of every citizen to experience equality and freedom from discrimination,” the resolution reads.

It states that the county “accepts and welcomes people of diverse backgrounds” and believes diversity contributes to a more vibrant community.

The resolution highlights the contributions of individuals from all walks of life, and it states that all people – regardless of age, gender identity, race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation or physical challenges – play a significant role in the county’s cultural and economic success.

Also, the resolution underscores the importance of creating a community where all citizens “can live without fear of prejudice and discrimination” and it calls for continued education and awareness efforts that promote civil rights.

When adopted, the resolution will officially designate June 2025 as Pride Month in Guilford County. It encourages residents to “respect and honor our diverse community” and to take part in activities that “build dialogue, strengthen alliances, and advance the equal rights of all individuals.”

The action by the board follows a broader trend of municipalities and counties across the US that are taking similar steps during Pride Month to show support for LGBTQ+ individuals and to celebrate their contributions to society.
