For many people who don’t live or work downtown, or live and work in downtown Greensboro, the main concern when coming downtown is where to park.
But until Dec. 6, drivers will have more to worry about than just parking. Even those intimately familiar with downtown Greensboro would be wise to allow some extra travel time for trips in the downtown area because of all the street and lane closings.
But if you find you’re having trouble getting to your destination on time, don’t feel bad, you have some good company. Mayor Nancy Vaughan had difficulty finding a route to her destination last week.
The lane closures are due to sewer line rehabilitation work and are intermittent.
During the day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., lanes on the following streets may be closed:
- Greene St. north bound between Paisley St. and W. Smith St.
- Greene south bound between Bellemeade St. and Lindsay St.
- Greene St. south bound between W. Friendly Ave. and W. Market St.
- Friendly Ave. west bound between N. Greene St. and N. Edgeworth St.
- Friendly Ave. west bound between Overlook St. and N. Tremont Dr.
- Market St. east bound between Tate. St. and Mendenhall St.
- Eugene St. north bound between W. Lindsay and W. Smith St.
And even if you avoid the downtown area during the day, you don’t get off scot free. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. lanes on the following streets may be closed:
- Edgeworth St. north bound between W. Sycamore St. and W. Market St.
- Spring St. south bound between W. Market St. and W. Washington St.
- Greene St. south bound between W. Friendly Ave. and W. Market St.
Basically, until the sewer line work is completed on Dec. 6, it’s probably going to take a little more time to get wherever you’re going in the downtown area, particularly when you add to the sewer line related closings the fact that North Elm Street is closed from Smith Street to Bellemeade Street for resurfacing and that there is construction on North Eugene Street.
