For decades, Page High School was a football powerhouse in the state and just about every time they played their archrival Grimsley, the Page Pirates won. Now, however, it is the time for the Grimsley Whirlies – who went undefeated and won the North Carolina 4-A High School State Football Championship in 2024 – to crow.
The Guilford County Board of Commissioners will greet the team, honor them and help them crow at the next Guilford County Board of Commissioners meeting on Thursday, March 6.
Grimsley defeated Rolesville High School 35 to 23 in Chapel Hill to win the championship on Friday, Dec. 20 of last year.
Rolesville is located in Wake County.
Grimsley Quarterback Faizon Brandon was named the Most Valuable Player of the state championship game; running back Mitchell Summers was named the Offensive MVP and Defensive lineman Bryce Davis was named as the Defensive MVP.
Guilford County Commissioner Mary Beth Murphy is scheduled to read the resolution that will be adopted unanimously by the board.
It reads, in part, “Whereas, founded in 1899, Greensboro High School (formerly known as Greensboro Central High School, Greensboro Senior High School, and now Grimsley High School), was established as the oldest institution of public secondary education in Guilford County and is one of the oldest high schools in the state; and Whereas, Grimsley High School is a 4-A school with a strong athletic program, including a variety of sports teams such as football, basketball, baseball, tennis, swimming, golf, and wrestling; and Whereas, for the second time in three years, Grimsley’s football program has won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4-A State Championship …. Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners recognizes and celebrates the 2024 Grimsley High School football team, coaches, athletic boosters, parents and all other members of their support network on their undefeated championship season and commemorates the effort required by all to ensure success for this team and these talented student athletes.”
The team ended the 2024 season with a 16-0 record and is currently ranked Number 1 in the Triad High School Football Rankings.
It has seen tremendous success under the impressive leadership of head coach Darryl Brown and with a lot of help from QB Brandon, who ended up as the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
Brandon is a five-star recruit who has committed to the University of Tennessee. He led the team offensively with 2,632 yards, and 33 touchdowns – all while amazingly only throwing one interception.
Davis is a four-star recruit who has committed to Duke University. He led the Whirlies defensively with 78 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, and 30 quarterback hurries
The Board of Commissioners’ resolution notes that Grimsley has “successfully navigated the academic and athletic fields through hard work, perseverance and dedication to the goal of excellence.”
