The Guilford County Sheriff’s Department reported this weekend that, on Tuesday, April 16, at just after 11:15 p.m., a deputy with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Pleasant Garden Road near Industrial Avenue.
The driver sped up to flee from the deputy, who followed the driver for roughly one mile when the vehicle crashed in front of Vandalia Christian School.
At the time of the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Department, the deputy was still some distance behind the suspect and there was never any physical contact between the deputy’s vehicle and the driver’s car.
The driver, Alton Johnny Bright Jr., a 28-year-old Greensboro resident, then fled on foot while Sherriff’s Department officers gave aid to the other people in the car.
Warrants were obtained for Bright Jr. for the following charges:
- Felony Speed to Elude
- Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
- Possession of Stolen Firearm
- Possession of Marijuana
- Careless and Reckless Driving
- Speeding
Bright Jr. was served with the warrants on Wednesday, April 17, and the following charges were added: Felony Hit and Run with Serious Injury, Possession with Intent to Manufacture and Sell, Deliver a Schedule III Controlled Substance.
As a result of the charges, Bright Jr. received no bond and was sent to the Guilford County jail in downtown Greensboro until his first appearance which was on Thursday, April 18. At that time, he received a $100,000 secured bond following his first appearance court.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the investigation is still ongoing and no further information will be shared at this time.
The accident is currently being investigated by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
