The 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum from March 9 through March 13.
The ACC and the Greensboro Coliseum announced the move on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The 2021 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament had been scheduled to be played at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the decision was made to change the venue to Greensboro.
It had previously been announced that the 2023 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament would be played in Greensboro.
On Thursday, March 12, 2020, the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum was cancelled in progress. Teams were on the court warming up for the first game of the day when ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced that due to concerns about COVID-19 pandemic, which was in its early stage, the tournament would be cancelled and no further games would be played.
An earlier announcement on Wednesday, March 11 had been that the games would be played with only the media and an extremely limited number of fans allowed in the Coliseum.
About the decision to change the venue for the 2021 tournament Swofford said, “The ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament has enjoyed terrific experiences an hospitality at Capital One Arena. We look forward to returning to Washington, DC, and appreciate Greensboro for welcoming and accommodating us during these unique and challenging times.”
The Greensboro Coliseum has hosted the Men’s ACC Tournament more than any other venue, and the 2021 tournament will be the 28th time it has been played at the Coliseum. The ACC is headquartered in Greensboro.
Greensboro Coliseum Manager Matt Brown said, “We are grateful for the opportunity to assist the ACC in these unprecedented times by hosting their relocated 2021 Men’s Basketball Tournament. We would like to thank Mayor Nancy Vaughan, the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Koury Corporation for their support in helping to bring this prestigious event to the City of Greensboro for the 28th time in our historic partnership with the ACC.”
Brown also said, “The 2021 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament will join the 2021 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, the 2021 ACC Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships and 2021 NCAA Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships to create a dynamic spring calendar of elite sporting events coming to ‘Tournament Town’ next spring.”
Are you sure. Leave it to Roy and Nancy it will not happen. Stand up Greensboro and demand better leadership
But is it REALLY coming to Greensboro?
What a lack of leadership decision. Telling us it’s too dangerous to have thanksgiving but in the same week saying it’s ok to have the acc tournament here in Greensboro and bring people from all over the east coast as if covid numbers didn’t matter. Yeah keep telling us how we’re supposed to live our lives and then do the opposite of what you tell us to do.
