A letter to the Editor from Rhino Times Reader Jon Firebaugh

Last year myself and others put forward and supported Bill Goebel as a candidate for Chairman of the Guilford County Republican Party. As the real party of democracy, there was an actual election and Chris Meadows was elected chairman in a three-way race. Goebel touted his friendship with Chief Justice Paul Newby, his role as a regional representative of the Boy Scouts, and his attaining the status of Eagle Scout as some of his qualifications.  I was also a boy scout, a trained scout leader, and additionally took Scouting’s “Wood Badge” training, the pinnacle of scout leadership training.

I have always taken the Scout Oath and Scout Law as guidelines for how to behave in life. Apparently despite being an Eagle Scout, Bill Goebel has forgotten the first two points of the Scout Law – “A scout is Trustworthy, and Loyal. Bill Goebel by his own admission met secretly with member(s) of the GCS board to collude with the Democrat members of the board to seat Goebel as District 3 representative and deny Michael Logan a seat on the board over a minor technicality in the process the Guilford GOP chose Logan.

At the March 2023 board meeting Goebel sat next to Michael Logan in apparent support of Logan being seated by the board which of course the ultra-left wing members denied. I attended that meeting and the next meeting where Goebel was seated by the board. Prior to the start I walked over and greeted Bill and ask him how it was going and he told me “The school board would never seat Logan” which didn’t surprise me, but I was blown away when the Board’s attorney Jill Wilson then proceeded to describe the technical “loophole” to deny Loagan a seat, and then the board proceeded to seat Goebel instead.

Stabbing a “friend” in the back for political gain is despicable. “Trustworthy and Loyal” don’t apply to Bill Goebel. Goebel has since then insulted all people who work in trades and non-management positions with his comment that Michael Logan “teaching how to change a tire” was not as useful as Bill’s supposed expertise. My message to the voters in District 3: Do not be fooled by Bill Goebel’s rhetoric – his actions speak to his real character.
