A Letter To The Editor From Rhino Times Reader Nicky Smith

With the vacancy left by Yvonne Johnson on January 28, 2025, I am stepping forward as a proven leader who deeply understands Greensboro’s needs and has a track record of delivering results. It would be an honor to serve on the City Council, contributing my experience and dedication to addressing our community’s critical issues.

As a lifelong advocate for Greensboro, I’ve worked tirelessly to support our neighborhoods. As the lead for the Preserve Friendly Avenue project, I collaborated with over 1,500 homeowners to secure a Neighborhood Conservation Overlay, protecting the character and integrity of our neighborhoods. This success reflects my commitment to listening, building consensus, and achieving results that benefit everyone.

As the owner of Carolina Digital Phone, a thriving Greensboro-based business, I know firsthand the challenges local entrepreneurs face. I also understand the opportunities to make Greensboro a business-friendly city that fosters economic growth and job creation. My 45 years of leadership experience equips me to address these challenges and ensure that our city supports businesses of all sizes, paving the way for a vibrant and prosperous community.

However, my vision for Greensboro extends beyond economic development. I am deeply concerned about the rise in crime in our city. To address the root causes of criminal behavior, we need comprehensive strategies involving law enforcement and community-based initiatives. Public safety is a cornerstone of a thriving city, and I am committed to working with stakeholders to create safer neighborhoods for all.

In addition, the growing homeless population in Greensboro is a serious issue that cannot be ignored. Addressing homelessness requires compassion, collaboration, and action. I will advocate for programs that provide shelter and pathways to stable housing, mental health services, and job training, ensuring that everyone in our community has an opportunity to succeed.

I have also filed to run for the City Council District 4 seat in November 2025 because I believe in Greensboro’s potential and want to continue serving our city meaningfully. Appointing me to the current vacancy would allow me to start working immediately to address the issues that matter most to our residents—public safety, homelessness, economic development, and strong neighborhoods.

Greensboro deserves passionate, proven leaders who are ready to take action. I am ready to bring my skills, vision, and dedication to the City Council and help make Greensboro an even better place to live and work.

Sincerely,

Nicky Smith
