The Greensboro Police Department and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office make drug-related arrests all the time, but the Sheriff’s Office has announced that a joint action of the two law enforcement agencies led to the arrest of a middle-aged man speeding along I-40 who was in possession of an extremely large amount of cocaine.
The Sheriff’s Office announced that, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, deputies with the VICE/Narcotics Unit of the department, in collaboration with the officers from the Greensboro Police Department “conducted a narcotics investigation that resulted in the arrest of 38-year-old Honorio Diaz-Vargas.”
The Sheriff’s Office hasn’t provided much additional information so it’s not clear what role the Greensboro Police Department played in the arrest or if officers were expecting Diaz-Vargas to be driving through the county.
The report from the Sheriff’s Office states that Diaz-Vargas was found to be in possession of 25 kilograms of cocaine – which comes to over 50 pounds – and that he has now been charged with two counts of Level 3 Trafficking in cocaine.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, cocaine costs about $50 a gram these days, which puts the value of the 25 kilos the driver is alleged to have had at roughly $1.25 million.
A drug complaint filed in federal court claims Diaz-Vargas was driving at over 100 miles per hour on a stretch of I-40 East in a Florida-registered SUV. According to that complaint filed last week, a Guilford County Sheriff’s deputy pulled Diaz-Vargas near the Mount Hope Church Road exit where the speed limit is 55 miles per hour.
The report stated that the deputy smelled marijuana, saw that Diaz-Vargas appeared nervous, and noticed bundles of wrapped cocaine in the backseat.

You can’t fix stupid.
Speaking of which, are we still supposed to celebrate diversity… Mr Diaz-Vargas?
Yes, we should celebrate diversity. (Diversity is about more than race by the way. Currently the biggest cultural divide in the US seems to be urban versus rural)
But linking diversity to one guy’s crime is clearly disingenuous. If you believe the actions of one person frames the entire race, well then, white people still commit the most crime by gross volume in the United States.
Just sayin.
U ain’t never lied
And non-whites commit disproportionately more crime by far.
Just sayin’.
Just a quick reminder that immigrants (especially illegal immigrants) commit the lowest level of crime proportionally of any group.
Immigrants like me and Aussie are law abiding people, which is why we are LEGAL immigrants.
Illegal immigrants are, by definition, NOT law abiding people. Don’t try your deceptive obfuscation here, and don’t bother citing some jerry-rigged Leftist study. Nobody believes your crap, Chrissy.
” ChrisCrap” !! I like it.
The data on this is clear. Illegals are the LEAST likely to commit crime once in the US.
Hey Chris is this guy an immigrant or one of those illegals you hold in such high esteem
The reality is undeniable. Illegal immigrants display a much greater propensity for crime (especially violent crime) than natural born Americans.
Austin has nothing to back up this statement other than his racism and bigotry. Study in Texas that was very well done and tracked the status of every individual who was arrested over the period of a year or more says very different. But Austin doesn’t like experts that don’t support his racism and bigotry.
I got news for ya, Chris. Every single illegal alien is a criminal the moment they step foot in our country. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Es verdad.
“Don’t Drive 100 MPH While Smoking Weed With $1 Million Worth Of Cocaine On Your Back Seat”
Darn it, guess I’ll have to go to Plan B
Plan B41a: snort it en casa.
Amazing what you might discover when you enforce Traffic Laws in Greensboro and Guilford County! It would not surprise me to see local law enforcement confiscate 100 illegal guns, 10 lbs. of marijuana, 5 lbs. of cocaine and 10 fugitives a week just by enforcing traffic law on Wendover Ave. Effective traffic law enforcement may also save some lives and reduce injuries from car crashes here as well? Wendover Speedway looks like a third world country with light poles, car parts, tires, and guardrails from crashes scattered on the ground up and down this stretch of road!
Is Diaz-Vargas legal? If not was ICE contacted? How ’bout that cocaine – what happens to the “pay-load”?
He’ll buy his way out of jail! They will give him a “GET OUT OF JAIL FREE CARD “ that he can use as soon as they lock him up!
When I read the original news story, it reminded me of all those folks driving gold rimmed Mercedes running powder up and down I-95 from Miami to New York in the Cocaine heyday of the 80’s. When you have 10 lbs. of gold chains hanging around your neck, and fur lined dashboards, that was just screaming to police “stop me and look what I got.” Stupid is, as stupid does.
I saw one of these folks in an Archdale gas station years ago. Gold rims, gold trimmed Mercedes, pulled in to get gas. The guy who got out of the car was all pimped out – fancy suit with a fancy hat, and gold chains (literally). With minutes, 2 of Archdale’s finest had their cruisers blocking him in, while they checked him out. They’re pretty on-the-spot with I-85 going right through the little town, and are always on the lookout for traffickers.
I drive that part of I-40 frequently, and the speed limit is 65 mph as soon as you get past Death Valley. For anyone who hasn’t lived here for decades, you can probably google Death Valley and find out where it is.
Thanks. Sheriff’s report states it was a 55 mph zone.
When I first read this news item, it reminded me of seeing all those gold rimmed Mercedes and BMW’s driving up and down I-95, running drugs from Miami to New York during the cocaine heyday of the 1980s. When you’ve got 10 lbs. of gold chains around your neck, and a fur covered dashboard, and a coke spoon hanging from the mirror, it’s just screaming for Crockett and Tubbs to stop you and “look what I’ve got.” Stupid is, as stupid does.
We are probably moving to the Greensboro area next year (retirement community) and advice on how to fit into a new area is one reason I read Rhino Times. Thanks for the helpful advice.
David since you have time, would suggest rethinking moving to Greensboro. I’m using your same time frame to get out of here. If you want high taxes, crime, “progressive” leadership, then this is the place for you. If you like funding pet projects for the county and city “leaders”, then Greensboro is tailor made for you. Good luck.
consider a ‘gated’ community . . . helps ‘birds of a feather flock together’ using ‘wealth’ as ‘feather’.
David,
Jv makes very good points and in fact I would add Guilford County to his warning.
My mother-in-law had to sell her home when the outer loop was being built and moved not just out of Greensboro but Guilford County as well. She bought a house in Randolph County, just across the line paying less then she would have here but her taxes went down noticeably.
Any word if Diaz-Vargas is an American citizen?
“Stupid is as stupid does”
The city council or Guilford Commissioners? I wouldn`t doubt either were party to this…
