Everyone thought it was over. They thought the horror had finally been vanquished and forced into hiding in the deepest, darkest bowels of the earth never to be seen or heard from again. It became a thing used to scare children onto the straight and narrow. It became the subject of light jokes at adult parties with comments like, “You’re still taking that seriously?”

Just when one might think that Donald Trump’s behavior can’t get worse, it does.  Now the president and some of his Republican cohorts are undermining and weakening the US Postal Service with the goal of causing late delivery of absentee ballots to boards of election so that they can’t be counted.

Since March 10, North Carolina has been in a state of emergency due to COVID-19 as declared in an executive order written by Gov. Roy Cooper. By declaring a state of emergency, the governor has been issued sweeping powers by the NC Constitution that effectively sidesteps the legislature and suspends other laws and regulations. This step is necessary to enable quick response to temporary situations such as hurricanes, floods, riots, etc. (It would take the legislature a few weeks to have a special session to deal with legislation and funding to deal with these issues.)

The “Defund the Police” movement is still going strong, only they have figured out their politicians are not too keen on the title. It turns people off, so they change the name to “redistribute the funding.” They just won’t say where the funds to “redistribute” come from, even though everyone knows. So, with that in mind, I have a proposal. One that will make those politicians put their money where their mouths are, or at least show them to be the hypocrites they are. (Like I really have to try to do that.)

I have raised the question several times as to what would happen to a home or business owner who was forced to defend themselves against BLM-backed rioters and anarchists when they move onto private property declaring their intentions to occupy, loot, burn and murder after law enforcement is ordered to stand down rather than being allowed to do their sworn duty. Well, now we know.

In a letter titled “Lights Out,” I was addressing how those that want to destroy America are using tactics from past masters of social destruction such as Mao, Lenin, Marx and Goebbels, to herd the majority of the shallow thinking masses in the direction they wanted, making them think they were the problem and only when they stared thinking correctly, aka, the propagandist’s way, were they going to quit being part of the problem.

I won’t say that Black Lives Matter.  Please, hear me out.  I believe that All Lives Matter – because they do.  I was raised not to care about the color of a person’s skin and that no color was more or less important than any other color.  Skin color is not something people choose.  That’s just the way it is and is no different than the color of your eyes or hair.

The radicals, the socialists, the Marxists, the communists – in other words leftists and members of the (Nationalist Socialist) Democrat Party – have reveled their ultimate plan. They are out to completely strip away any and everything that is the identity of the United States of America.

The recent Oklahoma Trump rally received 1 million requests for tickets. The arena limited the crowd to 19,000. Of the presumed 19,000 tickets distributed, only 12,000 to 6,200 actually attended. For several weeks all news agencies, liberal and conservative, raised questions about COVID-19 impact on health. Liberal politicians went further by fighting the rally in court. They eventually lost.

I served in the military during “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Homosexual troops didn’t just volunteer their lives to support democracy; they postponed their lives. I supported ending don’t ask, don’t tell before it was socially acceptable. Later, I was fired from a civilian job for defending a female against anti-homosexual harassment. Harassment is wrong no matter the victim or perpetrator. All of us should treat each other with respect and dignity even during disagreement.

The death of George Floyd can serve as an eye opener for finding solutions to the flood of black homicides occurring daily across the country. All too often the early morning news is little more than a recount of the previous night’s black-against-black murders and assaults. This is not police racism, rather it is black-against-black genocide.

Sixties solutions are going to be unsuccessful for 2020 problems. The shocking death of George Floyd should be thoroughly investigated to identify actual causes to develop successful solutions. All peaceful protesting should be allowed. However, automatically jumping to racism explanations increases division. It builds walls when success requires open input from all perspectives. The only way to break the cycle of racism is to stop demanding understanding from others while refusing to understand those others. Understanding does not necessitate agreement. We need real open dialog, not “discussions” intended to provoke arguments. We all need to stop hating others more than we think those others hate us. We all need to stop holding every member of any group responsible for the acts of a few representatives.

In 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that forcing a healthcare clinic to post signs supporting abortion was denying free speech. California was essentially forcing clinics to advocate abortion. In 2020, Twitter has essentially done the same. Twitter falsely labeled a comment by President Trump as “fake” and it inserted a link to what it biasedly believes is “factual” information. The company placed a digital sign in Trump’s digital room.

President Trump was criticized for defunding the World Health Organization (WHO). Many critics supported President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA was massive legislation that encouraged wider implementation of medical provider pay-for-performance reimbursement. Under the law, reimbursement is tied to clinical outcomes. If a desired outcome is not achieved, payment is reduced. If an error occurs the provider/organization is then liable for the entire cost of mistake and the care required to fix the mistake.

When people see situations running the gamut from the Hildabeast getting a pass from someone who believed she was going to be his boss soon to the current situation involving Mr. Floyd and others, both published and unpublished, it’s not hard to believe why people believe there is a two-tier justice system where who you know gets you better treatment then the common person.

Voting is an essential activity in a democracy. It must be taken seriously. If a state deliberately develops a secure process, openly evaluated by all interested parties and approved by pre-designated legislative pathways, they have the right to implement universal mail in ballots. The decision should not be hastily instituted by one person in silence. No party should be allowed to implement it under COVID emergency powers.

Hey, Roy.  (Yes, I know that form of address to him is considered disrespectful by some, but I have always lived by the philosophy that respect is earned, not given.) I know things like laws and your oath of office are considered by you to be suggestions to be adhered to when it suits you. And you make this very obvious by your total and blatant disregard for both the US and North Carolina constitutions by forbidding us to worship in our own ways and sending law enforcement out to harass, intimidate and punish citizens exercising their constitutional right to peacefully assembly.

Many state politicians rushed to increase restrictions to position themselves as proactive. Many policies were counterproductive. Several stay-at-home restrictions were created based on the assumption that people would forget to implement the measures. We would forget our masks and to remain separated by six feet. The policies took this into account. However, they forgot that people are social beings. Long periods of overzealous restrictions would eventually be ignored or openly fought. Less restrictive realistic scientifically based measures would have been more likely to be followed for a prolonged period of time.

COVID-19 is extremely contagious. Controlling highly contagious diseases with mitigation policies is difficult. High contagiousness combined with naive populations make virus characteristics more important at shaping the curve. Removing the policies will result in a new peak, smaller than it would have been in their absence. Singapore’s strict policies successfully leveled the curve until relaxed policies resulted in a new peak.

Quarantine policies have historically been less severe and encompassing than today. Several policy makers, presumably advised by public health, curiously withhold important concepts from voters. They plan on extending increasingly stringent restrictions until a vaccine is produced, despite natural immunity development. Elected officials are increasing restrictions unnecessarily due to fear of looking unresponsive. Many are trying to outdo each other to criticize opposition. Our rights are at risk. Public health is getting a black eye.

Before the Affordable Care Act (ACA), millions of Americans were charged more or denied health care coverage because they had a pre-existing condition like diabetes, arthritis or cancer. Now, elected officials – with the support of the Trump administration – are trying to send us back to that failed system by overturning the ACA in court.

This letter is difficult to write – very difficult.  Difficult because at of this time of anxiety created by political division and an unwillingness on the part of many to even consider the possibility that our views might be flawed or incorrect.  Difficult because we have lost the art of truly listening to those who think differently than we do and showing them and their ideas the respect they deserve.  Difficult because of self-centeredness and the hardening of our hearts to the struggles of others.  Difficult because the America we once were no longer exists.

With the passage of the COVID-19 relief package by Congress that includes $1,200 checks to be distributed to individuals beginning sometime in mid-April, we in Guilford County have an opportunity to do something special by creating an avenue for people to donate their checks to those with greater need.
