If you’ve gotten your fill of watching football in recent weeks, you now have a radically different way to be entertained: On Sunday, Sept. 29, from noon to 4 p.m., the 29th annual NC Paramedic Competition will take place Sunday at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.
The event will pit the reigning 2018 state champs from Wake Forest Baptist Aircare against five teams that, during this summer’s regional championships, won the right to challenge that team.
The regional champion hopefuls are teams from FirstHealth Montgomery, Harnett County EMS, Hoke County EMS, Mecklenburg EMS and Rowan County ES, which won competitions in July at various sites across the state.
The NC Paramedic Competition brings the teams into a ballroom with bleachers full of their peers to determine how well those teams respond to patients’ needs in a scenario that was designed by the state’s Office of Emergency Medical Services, which is part of the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).
The winning team is determined using a scoring system that was established by the competition’s medical director. Those who attend the event will have to wait to find out a winner: That announcement will be on Tuesday night, Oct. 1 at an Emergency Medical Services Expo awards banquet.
The competition is being co-sponsored by NC DHHS, the NC College of Emergency Physicians and participating community colleges. It’s all part of the 46th annual N.C. Emergency Medical Services Expo, which runs from Friday, Sept. 27, through Wednesday, Oct. 2.
