Greensboro will host the U.S. Figure Skating Championships for the third time in 2020, U.S. Figure Skating announced on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The championships will be held Jan. 20 to Jan 26, 2020 at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.
U.S. Figure Skating previously picked Greensboro to host the national championships in 2011 and 2015.
Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said, shortly after the official announcement, that the 2015 championships added $27 million to the local economy.
“Heads and beds,” Vaughan said. “It is hotel rooms and restaurant revenue and what people do where they are here. They shop and visit. This is a multi-day event. People go to museums and movies and do all sorts of things.”
Vaughan said Greensboro had to work to win the event.
“It was a very competitive process,” she said. “This is one of premiere events and the competition for it is fierce.”
Greensboro City Councilmember Tammi Thurm said, “It was a really exciting event last time it was here. I think it’s an inspiration to all of us, the dedication that the athletes display, and it’s a great family event.”
The championships have been held since 1914. The 2020 championships will determine the winners in the men’s singles, women’s singles, pairs and ice dance categories at the championship and junior levels of U.S. competition.
Vaughan said, “I believe this is the first venue where they were able to host all the events under one roof.”
NBC will broadcast and stream the 2020 U.S. championships.
Other recent U.S. Championships were held in Saint Paul, Minnesota (2016), Kansas City, Missouri (2017) and San Jose, California (2018). The 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships are scheduled to be held Jan. 18 to Jan. 27, 2019, in Detroit.
