A fire at Eastern Guilford High School on Monday afternoon, March 10 could have turned out to be a lot worse, but a School Resource Officer and firefighters managed to get the blaze under control before it spread to the rest of the school.

The incident is now under investigation, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

Many county residents will recall that, on Nov. 1, 2006, Eastern Guilford High burned to the ground in what was determined to be a case of arson.  No one was ever charged with that crime two decades ago; however, one former employee of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office told the Rhino Times years ago that law enforcement officials believed they had a pretty good idea of who committed that crime.

Thankfully, the fire on March 10, 2025, didn’t have the same catastrophic results.

Deputies responded to the incident just after 3 p.m. on Monday after the fire broke out in a school bathroom. The fire was extinguished by the school’s resource officer and the McLeansville Fire Department, preventing further damage or injuries.

The school was evacuated while the fire was contained.

In the report from the Sheriff’s Office, it seems clear as though arson is suspected in this case, as it was nearly two decades ago: Authorities have identified two juvenile suspects in connection with the fire, and juvenile petitions have been filed. However, secured custody orders sought by deputies were denied by the Juvenile Justice Court.

Due to the suspects’ ages, officials haven’t released additional details regarding their identities or possible motives.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is expressing its gratitude to responding deputies, the McLeansville Fire Department, the Guilford County Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Guilford County Schools’ School Safety and Emergency Management Department for their swift actions.

The high school has since resumed normal operations.

Officials encourage anyone with information related to the incident to contact Detective J. Allen at 336-641-2799 or Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
