You might not hear the phrase “Reading is FUNdemental” much anymore, however, it still holds true.

 And the High Point Public Library is encouraging kids to take part in the new summer program that should also allow some parents a little quiet time to themselves during the long hot summer months.

This week, the library announced that its 2024 Summer Programs will begin on Monday, June 10.

The theme this year is “Adventure Begins at Your Library!” and the library will offer reading incentives, programs and activities for all ages.

In June, the following events will be offered for children ages 0 -12. These programs don’t require registration unless indicated otherwise. You can sign up for email reminders at bit.ly/3MwnFXd.

Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m. — All-A-Flutter Butterfly Release in the Library’s Arts and Education Plaza

Thursday, June 13 at 11 a.m. — Big Bang Boom! Program at the Oakview Recreation Center (503 James Rd.)

Saturday, June 15 at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Vision Check for Kids in the Morgan Room at the Library

Thursday, June 20 at 11 a.m. — TaleWise Science Program at the Oakview Recreation Center (503 James Rd.)

Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m. — TaleWise Science Program in the Story Room at the Library

Thursday, June 27 at 11 a.m. — Down to Earth Aerial Program at the Oakview Recreation Center (503 James Rd.)

Saturday, June 29 at 11 a.m. — Superhero Meet & Greet in the Story Room at the Library

The following event will be offered for children ages 6-12.

Tuesday, June 18 at 4:00 p.m. —the  Discover Morocco Program, in the Story Room at the Library. Registration is required and opens two weeks in advance at bit.ly/3WQIYsr

The following event will be offered for children ages 7-12.

Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11 at 9 a.m. — STEM Camp, presented by NC Cooperative Extension, in the Morgan Community Room. Registration is required and opens two weeks in advance at bit.ly/3AJPiGs

Library employees are encouraging children to pick up a backpack, reading log, and stickers so they can earn weekly prizes for reading.

Participants can also enter the raffle for the grand prizes that will be announced at the end of the summer – including a Nintendo Switch Lite, Chromebook, Bicycle, Big Wheel, Lego set, Duplo set, American Girl Doll of the Year, and Wellie Wisher.

The reading challenge runs from June 10 to August 2.

Monday, June 10 — Summer Reading Kickoff! at the Readers’ Services Desk on the third floor; snacks in the Teen Garage from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

You can sign up for the Summer Reading Program and get a starter kit.

Or learn about the Library Lotto Incentive Program, and “earn goodies and prizes all summer!”

Every teen who enrolls in the Summer Reading Program is entitled to one free book of their choice.

Tuesday, June 11 — Crafty Teens: Fantasy Map Making, library hours while supplies last

Thursday, June 13 – Book Genre Bingo, Pick up a Bingo card during library hours

Tuesday, June 18 – Scavenger Hunt, Pick up a Clue Card during library hours

Tuesday, June 25 — Pixel Art Workshop, 4 p.m., Teen Garage

The Adult Summer Reading Program kicks off on June 10 with the summer book challenge registration opening.

The announcement from the library states that you can “Register online or at Adult Summer Reading displays in the lobby or on the 3rd floor. Between June 10 and August 2, read books in any format (print, eBook, audiobook CD, or digital) or genre (Manga, fiction, or non-fiction). Log every book you read online or drop in the boxes at the displays.”

After August 2, prizes will be awarded to winners in the following categories: Most print or eBooks, Most audiobooks, Most graphic novels/Manga –  and one random drawing.
