The City of High Point Public Services Department is celebrating National Public Works Week this year the same way it does every year – with the city’s annual Public Works Day, an interactive and educational event that will be held on Wednesday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to noon.
This family-friendly celebration of the city’s public works services employees will take place at the High Point Public Library and it’s meant to be both fun and educational. It will include booths that teach attendees about services.
And equipment from many of High Point’s Public Services divisions will be on display.
During the event, there will be both giveaways and demonstrations.
The Public Services Department is made up of 15 divisions that provide various services to High Point residents. Its mission is “to conserve and maintain the City’s investment in its infrastructure,” and the department’s services include things such as waste collection and conducting water and sewer projects.
As in past years, this event will have a mini excavator rodeo competition.
City officials describe the competition this way: “During the rodeo, public services employees will compete by performing two different tasks with the mini excavators to show off their skills with the equipment. Participants will be scored based on the total time it takes them to complete the tasks. The competition’s overall winner will be sent to the American Public Works Association equipment show and backhoe rodeo competition next spring and will take home a golden excavator trophy.”
High Point’s Public Works Day is free and open to the public.
In the event of bad weather, a rain date is scheduled for Thursday, May 23.
