Greensboro belatedly and begrudgingly released some of the public records that pertain to an incidence of domestic violence at the home of Greensboro City Manager Tai Jaiyeoba on Dec. 28.
However, some of the documents finally released raise as many questions as they answered.
The police report is a paper report. The Greensboro police, like pretty much everyone else in the modern world, quit using paper a long time ago. Reports are filed by computer. So why is the report from the city manager’s house on paper? Is it because Jaiyeoba is Police Chief John Thompson’s boss and requested that the police report not be filed in the system where it would be available to the public?
If that isn’t the case, why wasn’t the report available on the website where police reports are made available to the public?
Why did it take over a week for the city to release one of the 911 calls about the incident?
A check of the city’s public records system shows that six out of the seven requests for 911 calls were completed the same day the request was made. The other report was completed the day after the report was made.
However, a request from the Rhino Times for the 911 call on Dec. 29 concerning the incident at Jaiyeoba’s house was made on Monday, Jan. 15 and completed at 4:53 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23. There was no response to a call made on Monday, Jan. 22 to check on the status of the request. The public records request was only fulfilled after calls were made to Mayor Nancy Vaughan and City Attorney Chuck Watts. It is worth noting that Watts, like Jaiyeoba, reports directly to the City Council. Watts and his staff are the only city employees that don’t work for Jaiyeoba.
In the 911 call on Dec. 28, the caller states that she hit Jaiyeoba and pushed him and that his arm was broken. Those familiar with the case say that Jaiyeoba’s arm was not broken but his shoulder was dislocated. However, that is an injury that requires medical treatment.
In a normal domestic violence call, those with law enforcement experience say that an injury of that magnitude would result in an arrest.
The paper police report lists three victims, Taiwo Jaiyeoba and two of his daughters, Ileri Jaiyeoba and Moyo Jaiyeoba. Three victims but no arrests. This, according to experienced law enforcement personnel, is extremely unusual and violates the policies of the Greensboro Police Department. Why were no arrests made?
While being involved in a domestic violence incident may not reflect on Jaiyeoba’s ability to serve as city manager, if Jaiyeoba used his influence to receive special treatment, not only from the Police Department, but also from the public records division of the Greensboro Public Library system, those are issues that reflect directly on his ability to serve as city manager.
There is evidence that in this particular instance Jaiyeoba used his position as the boss to get special treatment that would not be available to the people of Greensboro who pay taxes and therefore pay his salary.
Perhaps there is another explanation for why this case of domestic violence was handled so differently from the hundreds of other cases the Greensboro Police Department deals with every year. And, also why the public records requests about this incident were not handled the way other public records requests are handled.
There are many rumors going around town about what really happened on Dec. 28 at 10 Postbridge Court. The Greensboro City Council has a duty to the residents of Greensboro to find out what the truth is and make an announcement about its findings.
If Jaiyeoba did not use his influence to receive special treatment, he should welcome an opportunity to put the facts before his employer the Greensboro City Council and the people of Greensboro.
Stay on this one. No one should be able to receive special treatment under the law. Especially people who are supposed to serve the public.
The City Council needs to do what should be done. Fire the City Manager. He has been terrible for the City of Greensboro since he came. Additional follow up on this indicates that he was assaulting his adult children. If this had been any other City employee they would have been arrested and fired. FlRE HIM!
I doubt that the true facts will ever be known except to a few. Was it special treatment? You betcha it was. I don’t think the general public is that stupid other than to continue voting the same clowns into office that end up hiring clowns like the current city manager. This is Greensboro and you know how it works.
I respect John Hammer a great deal, but come on Mr. Hammer, do you really think this group of narcissists is going to share anything with the minions that involves any of them? They will circle the wagons and play keep away as long as necessary.
Protecting one of their own. Keep voting incumbents.
Just another example of how these people think. When I say these people I mean people within the city government. Do as I say and not how I do. We need to know the type of people we the TAXPAYER are hiring and what they are capable of. Both as a employee and as a citizen.
Once again, I will post what the rule of law suggests for a Domestic Violence event in North Carolina. Our Mayor, our City Manager, our City of Attorney, and our Chief of Police have once again have tampered with or have knowledge of tampering with Public Records which the Citizens of Greensboro are entitled to see. I say once again as Public Records from the Feb. 10, 2023 criminal incident involving two off duty Greensboro Police officers have also mysteriously disappeared from the Greensboro Police Incident Website? Of course, our Mayor, City Manager and Chief of Police are known not to follow the NC Rule of Law”
I posed the following question to a professional law enforcement officer:
“It is my understanding that in a domestic violence case, the police are to determine whom the attacker is and arrest them on site? This is to protect those that have been attacked and are in danger?”
See response regarding domestic violence protocol in North Carolina from a 17-year veteran of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Dept.
“If there are signs of a fight…..bruises, scratches…..then by State Law, the aggressor is arrested. I’ve been to many domestic calls where both parties were cut up and scratched up. In that case, I arrested both. If one party claims an assault, but there are no physical signs, the warrants are advised. ”
Greensboro citizens should demand the immediate resignation of each of these individuals. Each are guilty of not enforcing City, State, and Federal Laws and are not fit to hold office or lead our city!

Word has it that the Manager called the Police Chief before the police arrived and, most likely, called Chuck Watts, and Nancy Vaughn. Yes, Tai Jaiyeoba received special treatment. There should be no respect for Jaiyeoba, Watts, Vaughn and HR from city employees, and city residents. City Council, Watts and Jaiyeoba should disappear into the toxic vapor. Any lowly male employee would have been fired as the domestic violence issue would reflect badly on the city. You know, Me Too. Do not drop this incident from the headlines. Jaiyeoba wants it hidden while he is trying to look for another job. Put the report online for the world to see. If it were anyone else, the report would have been placed online immediately. And Blacks complain about double standards.
Good reporting. Please keep us updated. The public deserves to know the details of this incident and if protocol is being adjusted for our appointed officials.
Based on what was reported, it appears to me that the City Manager was given more special treatment then Carter has liver pills. It also appears that the City officials…ELECTED City officials…the People’s representatives, are giving extra-special treatment to one of their employees for whatever reason.
Maybe it’s just me, but it appears EVERYONE, from the City Manager to the Police Chief, to members of the GSO City Council needs to be relieved, investigated, and , if guilty, removed from office immediately, and possibly charged.
Good piece John. Rules are made you and me, but not for the “ruling class”. See how this works?
If the response of the city was involved, then it’s a public record, so sue them to obtain it including recorded phone calls, responses by city employees, etc.
There is one set of laws for the citizens, and another set of laws for the public sector parasites. The latter are above the law.
This is a hallmark of an authoritarian society.
The fix is in.
Let’s start this with where did the names of these people come from? If they’re from some African nation then have they attained US citizenship? If not, why the hell is that person the city manager? Most likely the guy is from Burlington, but figured he’d have more DEI creds if he changed his name to something like he did.
Regardless, here we are with another criminal act by a public official that is of the political party that is immune from prosecution…for the moment. Enjoy it while you can.
He’s Nigerian (but probably a naturalized US Citizen).
He is a naturalized US citizen.
We the people,,,,, have no rights anymore, only if you are of the “Elites”
and it is sad to see, that even relatively small town city works, are in that rank now.
MR hammer sir you’re not going to like this but I’m just being frank. He’s not going to resign over this and no one is going to push the issue because we simply don’t want to this will blow over and will not receive much attention from the powers to be, you guys dont have enough pull around here and that’s that, those days are long gone and we dare the mayor to make a stink of this she likes her job and knows who she can’t upset I would let this one go, I’m sure it’s a homeless shelter you wish to shut down so work on that expose tomorrow. Don’t waste your energy here!
Watch out big city, my grandpa had a saying
“You’re getting a little big fer yer britches better be careful, you’ll gett’em caught on a nail”
You control NOTHING!!! And I’m the one to big for my “britches” you live in a new day except or hit the county line!!!
You really need to go back to school, learn how to spell and then compose a proper sentence. Watch out for those nails.
Your reply confirms that the insane is running the asylum. There is so much wrong with Greensboro, and your comment reveals that it is the change in demographics. Why would you be proud of helping Greensboro become a cesspool? Is this the way the new demographics think? If so, it confirms what was feared all along. We now have an uninformed plinth voting population that cannot think for itself. An infirmed plinth will destroy an entire structure, which is where Greensboro is now. I do agree with your comment about Mayor Vaughn.
As far as City Manager Tai Jaiyeoba, the Internet assures that his behavior will not be swept under the carpet. It will follow him to the end of time.
Now wait a minute maybe we are being too hard on the manager. He is from Nigeria after all and in his culture he has a right to do whatever he wants regarding females, they are after al, second class people in his world. We should hear his side of the story. ( lots of sarcasm here in case you didn’t recognize it)
BlackCity never fails to see everything in racist terms.
100% Agreed! This City Manager has a past at the Charlotte/Mecklenburg and was about to be fired. He has not been honest since day one. He works hard…. To get his picture and posts on LinkedIn and the American Planning
Association websites. This event was obviously a domestic violence call. Special treatment for “the boss” is not appropriate when it comes to Domestic Violence. These are the worst calls and events. If it happens once, it will happen again. These are never one time, isolated cases. Our City Council needs to look more closely at this City Manager. Domestic Violence is absolutely unacceptable! Posts on the APA website about how racist Greensboro is …not appropriate. Who is monitoring this man. Hiring him was a mistake. We must not ignore domestic violence! This is completely unacceptable!
Jaiyeoba is clearly a militant BLM supporter. His only salient accomplishment in Charlotte was the creation of a huge celebratory BLM (Black Lives Matter) mural in the downtown district.
If nothing criminal or wrong happened there sure does seem to be a lot of work being done behind the scenes to cover it up. If the manager did try to influence the chief, why did the chief allow it? Fine to have to the council look into the manager, but the chief has some explaining to do as well seeing as how he is the one who had to ok all of the special treatment the manager received. Mr Hammer, if you were to call on the chief right now, would you get that same type of treatment? If the answer is no then Houston we have a problem.
This is in no way the Police Chief’s fault. He was put in an impossible situation by the City Manager.
SMH
It is not an impossible situation. It should be handled the same way it would be handled for you and me and anyone else. Since police do that all the time it proves it is not impossible. Just because of who is involved should never influence what is done.
SBI should have been involved immediately. It’s not too late for a formal investigation. A leave without pay for the City Manager is also needed.
The current city manager will be gone by early 2025 and the reason will be simple. After a tax increase this year (yes Greensboro you will be seeing another tax increase in his June budget) He plans yet another tax increase for 2025 . Council will tell him no because it will be an election year (the only time they ever say no) so he will move on to another organization hoodwinked by his smile.
While Mr. Hammer’s article does not detail the name of the 911 caller in this domestic violence article concerning our City Manager, I do have some personal experience with obtaining the transcipts of 911 emergency system logs. Every time a person makes a call into this system, no matter who they are, it’s recorded. If you follow this protocol correctly, you should be able to get the printout of exactly what has happened for your incident at your location. This is useful in case you need to go to court for what has happened. This is especially useful in this case because we have a very good example here of a male victim of domestic violence. All TOO often we think that only females can be victimized in family violence situations. However, in this particular case not only has the aggressor been so violent as to cause a serious injury causing the need for police intervention but also medical care. I would also like to point out the recent murder of the Guilford County Family Justice Center’s Officer Nix. He was attempting to stop a robbery while off-duty himself. The Family Justice Center offers domestic violence services, helps file protection orders otherwise known as 50B with the courts, helps children who have possibly been sexually abused and with elderly abuse cases. They cover the range of victims. Family violence is a scourge which knows no boundaries of economic or social or racial protection. It does not become limited just because a person might have a higher education level or good job. The victim is usually co-erced into hiding themselves behind barriers of shame and embarrassment and will go to great lengths to protect their abuser. It can become very difficult to resolve these situations safely and extract the victim, children and even the family pets. If you or anyone you know are living in a situation like this, there is hope available for you. Do not despair. I myself grew up in a violent, well educated professional family. The scars remain. BUT, it is possible to receive treatment and recovery is possible for you TOO. Family and Children’s Services of the Piedmont is another nonprofit organization locally that can assist you with help. Monarch Behavioral Health can also provide counseling. Dial 988 if you are in mental health crisis.
Excuse me, how do you know the victim was a male?
Excuse me, how do you know the victim was a male? Being hurt does not automatically make the person a victim. The injury may have resulted from their own actions.

Hey Chrissy!
Dial 988.
Could you set up an outpost for reporting like this in Fayetteville? If you think this is bad, you could write a book or two over here.
I’m fascinated by these comments. Asking leading questions that you don’t have the answers for, yet are intended to plant seeds of suspicion, is “great reporting?” Based on the facts at hand, not the leading questions, all we know is that he is reportedly the victim of domestic violence, right? Look Hammer, I know you’ve got to feed the mob that consumes this stuff red meat, but this article is aspirational. You all aspire to fire the liberal black guy from Charlotte. You and your readers have wanted it for a looonng time. Let’s just call what it is, your normal race baiting. When was the last time you wrote an article like this about a white public official? I’ll wait…
If this incident had occurred in the Trump household, do you think it would be newsworthy?
Prior to Dec 2023, when was the last time a 911 call was made to report an assault by a city manager? I’ll wait… By the way, what are the leading questions your comments refer? Normal race baiting? Was the manager involved in an altercation with his children/family? Yes, according to a 911 call. Was the report of the incident filed with the police in the usual manner? No, it was not. Based on standard police procedure, was procedure followed in this case? No, it was not. The manager happens to be Black. So, reporting the event is race baiting? Would you have preferred that the event be swept under the rug? And it should be swept under the rug because…the manager is Black? Now that, my dear Observer, is racist because you would harbor a Black man from scrutiny but not if he were not Black.
