The High Point Public Library, in these times of high prices, has been trying to throw people a bone and make certain otherwise pricey events more affordable or free for low-income families.

On Wednesday, Oct. 25,  the library announced its newest partner in the Borrow an Experience Program.  That partner is We Rock the Spectrum of the Triad, which is an indoor children’s gymnasium.

Through this partnership, library users can check out a pass to visit the gym on a weekly basis. (More details are available at bit.ly/3EPdHMf.)

This latest addition to the Borrow an Experience Program will, library officials say, “further inclusivity” since We Rock the Spectrum of the Triad was founded “to provide a place for children of all ability levels to play and grow together.”

Children can benefit from the sensory equipment – which is designed specifically to help children with sensory processing disorders.

Late last year, the High Point Public Library launched its Borrow an Experience Program, which allows adults to check out tickets to local children’s museums, theaters, recreation facilities and other businesses, mostly in the High Point area.

People check out the passes the same way they would check out a book. But rather than getting something to read, they get an experience for a limited period of time.

The program is meant to help remove financial barriers for children interested in experiences while highlighting local organizations.

The High Point Public Library has been attempting to become “a more inclusive and inviting space.”

In 2022, the library was certified by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards as a Certified Autism Center. Earlier this year, the High Point Public Library started offering a monthly “Sensory Friendly Story Time” that’s been very well received by members of the community.

Many of the library’s partners in the Borrow an Experience Program are also Certified Autism Centers, such as the High Point Theatre, the Nido and Marianna Qubein Children’s Museum, The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards, High Point Museum and the High Point Rockers.

In addition to the ongoing Borrow an Experience Program and Sensory Friendly Story Time, the High Point library’s initiative to be a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone includes the upcoming Sensory Garden, which is expected to be completed next year.
