Another stage of Greensboro Downtown Parking Plan has been completed and the results released.

The results of a downtown parking survey for people who frequent the downtown area and for those who own businesses in downtown Greensboro have been released and the master plan for downtown parking is scheduled to be released this fall.

In 2017, the Greensboro City Council approved the construction of two new parking decks in downtown Greensboro.

The Eugene Street parking deck across Bellemeade Street from First National Bank Field, the home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, opened in 2021. The February One-Westin Hotel parking deck is still under construction.

Nearly six years after the City Council voted to spend $60 million to build two new parking decks, the city is still in the process of finishing a Downtown Parking Plan.

No one has suggested that it is a race, but it will be interesting to see whether the Downtown Parking Plan, which is being done by Kimely-Horn, or the February One-Westin Hotel parking deck is completed first.

One interesting item in the “Existing Conditions Report” is that the Church Street parking deck next to the Greensboro Central Library has an average peak occupancy of 25 percent of its capacity and typically has 317 parking spaces available during the day.  The deck has its highest use during events, with a maximum utilization of 81 percent on a Friday evening.

According to the survey of people who frequent downtown Greensboro, 86 percent list “having more spaces available” as a suggested improvement to downtown parking.

And 80 percent of those responding to the survey listed “knowing the location of available parking spaces” as an improvement.

Improved signage was listed as a necessary improvement by 67 percent of those who responded to the survey for off-street parking.

In the on-street parking portion of the survey, 91 percent listed having more spaces available as an improvement and 69 percent listed having longer time limits as an improvement.
