For the last several years, the day-to-day activities of police officers have been a major topic of discussion across the country.
The defund the police movement has acquired real teeth in some areas of the country and the Greensboro City Council has been criticized for both providing too much funding for the Police Department and not enough.
Each year the Greensboro Police Department gives residents of Greensboro an opportunity to get a firsthand look into the operation of the department by holding the Greensboro Police Citizens’ Academy.
The application period for the Greensboro Police Citizens’ Academy is currently open and the deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, the day after Thanksgiving.
The Greensboro Police Academy sessions are scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, and sessions are scheduled every Monday and Wednesday through Wednesday, April 13.
Due to COVID-19 concerns the 2022 Police Citizens’ Academy will have masked, social distanced students attending in person as well as students attending via Zoom. Those participating via Zoom will miss out on the in-person and hands on demonstrations. If COVID-19 guidelines change in Greensboro, the academy will adapt to those changes. As with everything else happening during the era COVID, nothing is written in stone.
The goal of the academy is to give participants greater insight into the Police Department and form long-term partnerships to share responsibilities and resources in an effort to make Greensboro safer for everyone. The sessions are taught by subject matter experts from across the Police Department to give the participants a greater understanding of police responsibilities and procedures.
City Councilmember Marikay Abuzuaiter is a graduate of the academy and often promotes the Greensboro Police Citizens’ Academy at City Council meetings.
Abuzuaiter organized a “mini-academy” for her fellow councilmembers in 2020 where councilmembers were invited to spend a couple hours learning about police procedures, such as how a traffic stop is conducted from beginning to end.
