Having the United States Capitol Building taken over and desecrated by a violent mob was not something most Americans ever expected to see.
To have it take place while a historic joint session of Congress was taking place made it all the more disturbing.
A number of local elected officials voiced their views on that violence on Twitter.
Mayor Nancy Vaughan expressed her concern that the issue was racial and tweeted, “If this was a BLM protest Trump would be screaming for law and order. White privilege on display.”
City Councilmember Justin Outling, who has announced he is running for mayor this year, expressed concern for those working in the Capitol, which, of course, included the entire House of Representatives and the Senate.
Outling tweeted, “My heart goes out to those working in the US Capitol today. I believe in America and democracy and this is not it.”
City Councilmember Sharon Hightower also saw a connection to Black Lives Matter and tweeted, “Totally unacceptable. If this was Black Lives, they would be called hoodlums. Is this how the next four years will be? We accepted their victory. Now it’s time for accept ours. So disrespectful to the Capitol built by slaves.”
State Rep. Jon Hardister tweeted his press release on the violence. He tweeted, “Here is a statement that I released today on the violence that occurred at the U.S. Capitol. We are better than this.
“It is concerning to see what is happening in our nation’s capital. Peaceful protesting is good for democracy, but there is not place for violence.
“The most effective way to change hearts and minds is with the spoken word, not with acts of violence. Law and order must be respected at all times. Doing harm to people and destroying property is not the answer.
“Our country has been through a lot with the pandemic, a contentious election and a divided electorate. We must work to overcome these challenges, but our efforts must be peaceful.
“We should listen to each other, respect each other’s opinion, and work to make changes within the confines of the law. I pray for the preservation of freedom and tranquility in our great nation.”
Jon Hardister and Outling”s statements are the only listed that show any kind of ability to lead and not be a reactionary race baiter. From all accounts the crowd in DC was large and covered many demographics but there was only one homicide.
It was an unarmed protester shot dead in the neck by tax payer funded law enforcement. How is that worse than tax payer funded law enforcement in Greensboro that committed homicide of an individual that wasn’t even doing anything other than asking for help. Our Mayor and council don’t see the sad truth that they are refusing to pay a settlement to a black mans family that was killed by white officers, covered up by a white Mayor and Chief, and that was killed in front of a 95 million dollar monument to the oligarchy that rules our officials. Race baiting and hypocrisy is a sad way for any Mayor but seems part for the course here.
Sound’s like the Mayor approves of looting, destruction of priviate property, business and burning buildings…..way to go Vaughan.
Sounds like the Mayor is instigating advocating racial hatred and violence. IMPEACH HER!!!!!!!!!!!
Again, these people were just fine with BLM/Antifa terrorists and the riots they started – all summer long.
When all the arrests and investigations are completed for the incursions at the capital, I will bet there is a connection with paid protesters from the left such as Antifa who were involved in this horrible situation.
Correction Nancy: If it had been a BLM protest, no one would have been arrested and the police and national guard would have been instructed to stand down, just like you instructed the police to stand down in downtown Greensboro back during the summer riots! White privilege my ass!
Actually Ms Hightower, you didn’t accept it, if you are in the we that you referred to. You fought it for 4 years. Mrs Clinton never accepted it. You formed a resistance.
It was a peaceful protest yesterday that lasted 6 hours. Much like the 8 weeks of peaceful protest this summer.
Not a word out of these people all summer when BLM and others were burning down business’ and cities across the country
Do you honestly think any of them would contradict the (National Socialist) Democrat Politburo line?
All, with a statement like that from a mayor who is elected to represent everyone of any race it is beyond time to recall Nancy. Impeachment anyone? She should resign. As for the racist Sharon Hightower (ironic) does anyone expect anything but a stupid statement like “we accepted the 2016 election” which everyone knows is a damned lie. Buckle up Sharon it’s gonna get ugly! We’re gonna give you dems some acceptance and tolerance and lots of understanding!
The way you can tell BLM wasn’t in the capital Wednesday is the NIKE store, the Walgreens, the Apple store and the Wal-mart weren’t looted! There were no police cars burned innocent people weren’t assaulted on the street and not one persons business was burned down. And we’re the deplorable smelly Wal-Mart people. We’re the Dregs ( joe Biden)! As for me Nancy, I’m sure glad BLM wasn’t there and I wish you weren’t here.
If BLM and Antifa had been involved , the police would have been told to STAND DOWN, no protester would been shot and killed by police, and the Capital building might have burned to the ground. think Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington state, Oregon,NY, etc.
The limited capacity to understand how government works repeats itself in these remarks from our city council. Local leaders you must consider other facts. Breaking the law to win an election is illegal, Following a path of being exposed takes time to make the case with evidence which is happening now by Tom Fitton. Those violations of “making up new election laws” without our legislative process alone set the tone for frustrations. We the people expect to be heard. Others whose idea of expression is physical acts which are not legal are the human condition falling out. It exists on both sides of the isle of politics and ‘being’. Name calling is not necessary when we have a very eloquent language to express ourselves by. Please stop defining American human beings as a judgement description. It is an insult to all human beings as well as defining yourselves as the same.
In 2016, Mr. Trump was the right man at the right time, just the wrong mouth.
I read that everyone in Washington is screaming the the Government must preserve civic order. Right. uuuuuuuuut,
The Dems have conveniently ignored the national rioting and chaos through-out all the Country for the last four years, under the watch of Democrat-controlled cities – including ours.
