At a time when businesses and services in the area are opening back up after the coronavirus pandemic’s initial hit, the City of High Point has announced that, due to COVID-19, the city is completely shutting something down.

On Sunday, May 31, High Point officials announced that the High Point transit system was suspending all service indefinitely.

The shutdown is the result of a confirmed positive COVID-19 case. The suspension will affect all routes – including High Point Transit System Access routes – starting Monday, June 1.

Well, almost all. There’s one exception: The city will continue service for people who need transportation to get to and from their dialysis treatments.

The city put out word of the Monday suspension on Sunday night and, with more and more local businesses now open, there were no doubt some stranded commuters who found themselves making last-second plans for getting to work Monday morning.

In the weekend press release announcing the closure, city transportation officials said the system will continue to adhere to best practives.

“High Point Transit System has continually followed federal, state and local sanitation guidelines of our vehicles,” the press release stated. “We continue to encourage passengers to use social distancing and follow the 3W’s, wear, wait and wash, while utilizing our transit service.”

High Point Transit System Manger Angela Wynes said everything is being done to keep the service suspension as brief as possible.

“While we understand the inconvenience for all of our passengers, the safety of our riders and staff is our top priority,” she stated. “We will work as hard as possible to clean, sanitize and take every step we can to put our fleet back into operation as soon as possible.”
