With even the 2020 Olympics postponed for a year due to COVID-19, it appears the Wyndham Championship is getting a good deal.
The revised schedule calls for the Wyndham Championship PGA tournament to be played at Sedgefield Country Club in August – one week later than originally scheduled.
The PGA Tour announced on Monday, April 6, that it had moved the Wyndham to August 13-16. The Wyndham was originally scheduled for August 6-9. So the Wyndham, according to the plan currently in place, will be played one week later than originally scheduled.
According to the latest announcement from the PGA Tour, events through the week of the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament, May 7-10, have been cancelled. The PGA Championship originally scheduled for May 14-17 has been moved to August 6-9, which is the week the Wyndham was going to be played. So the PGA Championship has pushed the Wyndham back a week to make room in the schedule for a postponed PGA Championship.
What nobody at this point knows is if four months from now the world will be back to normal or if there will still be restrictions on social gatherings.
The Masters, originally scheduled for April 9-12, has been tentatively rescheduled for Nov. 9-15, which makes the Wyndham being moved one week look good.
In a press release, Wyndham Tournament Director Mark Brazil said, “The Coronavirus and its effect on sports events worldwide and life in general are unprecedented, and while our first concern remains public safety, we are very happy to make this announcement. We thank the PGA TOUR and golf organizations worldwide for working together to reschedule the Majors and create a schedule for the rest of the season.”
Brazil added, “The health and safety of everyone associated with the Wyndham Championship and the Piedmont Triad community will remain our No. 1 priority as we navigate the ongoing health crisis related to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Wyndham Championship staff is fully engaged in preparing for this year’s tournament, and we look forward to welcoming fans to Sedgefield in August.”
