If you’re a talented artist in need of a place to show off your masterpieces, the people who run Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA) want to talk to you.
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, PTIA put out the word that the airport is looking for local artists to provide art to line its walls. It’s not a paying gig, unfortunately, but it will highlight the work at the place where travelers from all over can see it.
Though this is an attempt to show off the work of local artists, the airport is using a broad definition of “local.” The opportunity is open to all artists in North Carolina as well as to those in the southern Virginia counties of Grayson, Carroll, Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania and Halifax.
Preference will be given to artists from the 12 counties that make up the Piedmont Triad region.
Here are the types of work the airport is seeking:
- Two-dimensional paintings, photographs and mixed media
- Small three-dimensional sculptures
- Large outdoor sculptures
The airport is also accepting ideas for special projects in the concourses.
A number of exhibition sites at PTIA will be filled with art, such as a wall on the airport’s lower level in the baggage claim area and two walls at the bottom of the central escalator. There are also Plexiglas pedestals in the main terminal and ticketing areas where art will be displayed.
Outside, there are cement pads where sculptures can be exhibited.
While the airport isn’t paying for the art that’s on loan, artists will be paid for travel to and from the airport during installation and de-installation. A pre-agreed upon fee will also be paid to cover the installation time and transportation costs for large sculptures and special projects.
In addition, all the artwork will be insured by the airport while on exhibit there.
