And the winners are…

On Wed. Feb. 5, ArtsGreensboro announced its 2020 arts grants winners in the categories of “Mission Support,” “Project Support,” “Regional Artists” and “Teacher Art Education.” Last month, a panel convened to review all the grant applications and make funding recommendations to the ArtsGreensboro board.

The Mission Support grants went to area arts venues since those grants are meant to promote “the creation or presentation of programming with high artistic merit” and to “engage the community and enrich the varied cultural vitality of Greater Greensboro.”

Total funding in this category was $250,000, which is nearly a 10 percent increase over the funding for those grants last year.

This year’s Mission Support recipients are:

  • Carolina Theatre of Greensboro ($25,247)
  • Community Theatre of Greensboro ($32,171)
  • Eastern Music Festival ($51,574)
  • GreenHill Center for NC Art ($25,211)
  • Greensboro Symphony Orchestra ($52,150)
  • Music Academy of North Carolina ($12,793)
  • Triad Stage ($50,854)

ArtsGreensboro also gives out Project Support Grants – which are, in part, funded by the NC Arts Council Grassroots Program. These grants are designed to support “the creation or presentation of project-based programming with high artistic merit.”

The recipients in this category are:

  • Piedmont Blues Preservation Society ($5,750)
  • Touring Theatre of North Carolina ($3,750)
  • Greensboro Literary Organization ($5,750)
  • TAB Arts Center ($5,750)
  • Greensboro Opera ($7,750)
  • Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet ($3,000)
  • Elsewhere ($3,000)
  • Center for Visual Artists-Greensboro ($1,000)
  • Dance Project ($2,500)
  • Josephus Thompson III ($1,000)
  • Music for a Great Space ($3,750)

In partnership with the NC Arts Council, Alamance, Randolph, Rockingham and Caswell Counties, ArtsGreensboro also makes Regional Artist Project Grants meant to “help artists with big projects in their careers.” In 2020, awards of between $900 to 1,900 will be given to 15 artists for their work.

In a category funded by Wells Fargo, ArtsGreensboro also chose 12 area teachers for projects promoting the arts in schools to the tune of $13,000.  The grant recipient projects announced included ones such as breakdancing for fourth graders and a project that uses visual arts to promote tolerance and diversity.
