It wasn’t quite Stephen F. Austin University beating number one Duke, but on Saturday, Nov. 30, the UNC-Greensboro Spartans basketball team pulled off a big upset by going into the home arena of the Georgetown Hoyas and handing the storied Big East program a 66-61 loss.
The win is yet another key milestone for the Greensboro basketball program that’s been improving year by year – and a team that showed again on Saturday that they can play with anyone from any conference.
Georgetown Coach Patrick Ewing – who as a player led the Hoyas to a national championship in 1984 – watched with frustration as UNCG used crisp passing and a trapping defense to hand the Hoyas the loss.
Keyshaun Langley, James Dickey, Malik Massey and Angelo Allegri led a very balanced scoring attack for UNCG and the pesky defense gave the Hoyas trouble all game long resulting in 14 steals and creating other turnovers.
The third time proved a charm: The two teams had met twice before, with UNCG losing big each time. In December 2016, the Spartans lost 78 to 56, but UNCG has been getting better every year.
UNCG Coach Wes Miller has done an impressive job with the team that had only nine wins and 22 losses in the 2012-2013 season. The team has shown steady improvement each year since then and, over the last three seasons, the team has gone from 25 to 27 to 29 wins, making UNCG one of the top teams in the country in the category of total wins over the last three seasons.
