On Sunday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m., the GreenHill Center for NC Art in Greensboro will hold a special presentation of The Touring Theatre of North Carolina’s original production of “Star Spangled Girls.”
The show will take place in the gallery during Veteran’s Day weekend.
Five actresses portray Army and Navy women reserves, nurses, and Red Cross volunteers as they share memories about “enlistment, basic training, service at home and abroad, love and segregation.”
Of course, war era songs are woven tightly into the production as well.
Attendees will also get to see war-themed images photographed in Normandy at the D-Day landing beaches. Those are part of a new exhibit from artist Gesche Würfel.
GreenHill’s Director of Artistic and Curatorial Programs Edie Carpenter said this week that the event looks both backward and forward in time.
“This exhibition coincides with the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings,” Carpenter said. “Gesche Würfel visited Normandy two years ago and several of her photographs taken there will be seen in North Carolina for the first time. Testimonies by soldiers and survivors of the conflict presented in the exhibition remind the viewer of the timeliness of this moment as we reflect on the future.”
The play and reception are free for veterans and their families. For others the cost is $10 for general admission tickets at the door.
